Comfortable Victories to Canadian Joy and Identify
Monday 1st March
Canadian Joy won his second race in the first at
Toowoomba over 850 metres last Saturday. Ridden by
Phillip Wolfgram Canadian Joy was quick from the
gates and settled just behind the lead bunch. The
three year old Canadian Silver gelding pounced at

length in front of Ulmarra. The win prompted race

“I’m
pretty happy with that win,” said trainer Neville
Saunders. “I think there was a bit of quality in
that race.”
On
Sunday Identify continued her run of good form.
After settling just outside the leaders in the
Pakenham 0-62 sprint, she managed to steal a break
at the turn. The favourite, Exceed All Limits, gave
chase, but never looked likely of running down the
grey mare. Identify won by 1¾ of a length. “Jade

Ricky Maund after the race. “Some of our horses are

Street
Stall, Swift Sands and Street Sign Sparkle in
Saunder’s Trifecta
23 January 2010
“It’s
hard to believe they have given Street Stall 58.5
and Swift Sands 56.5” said Neville Saunders about
the handicapper’s weightings in the fifth at
Toowoomba, a 1000 metre QTIS class 2. The other five
horses in the race were all weighted from 54 to
55.5kgs including two others from Neville’s stable –
Street Sign and Medwin. After mulling the problem
over, Neville elected to give Phillip Wolfgram the
mount on the top weight and Melody O’Brien, who
could claim 3kgs the job on Swift Sands.
Upon
jumping Swift Sands was quick to find the lead and
put distance between herself and the others. Phillip
Wolfgram, knew that the filly, a typical and
successful front runner had a 5kg weight advantage.
He urged Street Stall to give chase, and finally at
the post succeeded. The handicapper had
got it right. Tongue twisting the race caller was
Street Sign who completed the trifecta. Under the
circumstances Pat O'Shea did a pretty good job. Stablemate,
Medwin finished sixth.
“Street
Stall has really responded well to winkers. He
settles more in running. I think we can take him to
town now and perhaps step him up to 1200 metres. His
half sister
Street Smart
was a
winner at Group 2 level over 1200 and she was a
placegetter in the Doomben 10,000 (Group 1) over
1350 metres.”

metres by almost five lengths.
More
than 150 kilometres away and just 15 minutes later

win by more than eight lengths. “He has always shown
signs that he has ability, but he has tended to over
race and then switch from on to off and back again.
Today we put him in winkers and I think they did the
trick,” explained trainer Neville Saunders. The

The Judge is the Winning Post!
16 January 2010
The
past week brought a new dimension to the fortunes of
the Lauriston team at Corinella. With three winners
at Bairnsdale on Saturday, January 16, the decisive
win by Perikon at Moonee Valley the night
before and Agar at Pakenham on January 9
brought the week’s tally in Victoria to 5 winners
and Identify an unlucky 2nd at Mornington on
Friday, January 15. Paramount’s 3rd. placing
behind her stablemate, the runaway winner
Rapidement at Bairnsdale suggests that a win for
the ex Queensland trained mare is not too far away.
The whole team at Lauriston deserve a good pat on
the back with a special thanks to Ricky Maund who is
certainly placing his horses to advantage.
To add
a little more icing to the cake two of the five
winners, Glenariff and Zapphire were
home-bred. These two brought the overall number of
Lauriston bred winners to twenty-five.
Congratulations to Paul and Kathy Eden, co-managers
of Lauriston’s breeding arm for their perseverance
and dedication.
Not to
be outshone, the Queenslanders chipped in with two
very good winners during the past week as well.
Argenteum was quite dominant at Ipswich and on
Saturday night, Swift Sands showed her true
potential with a commanding victory by 5.5 lengths
at Toowoomba. Well done Nev and the Queensland team.
So,
nine individual winners in 13 days is no mean feat
and all at Lauriston appreciate the effort extended
by all members of staff, support staff and
supporters.

A
Double, a Treble and a Quadruple
16 January 2010
Trainer
Ricky Maund and jockey Jade Darose combined to win
three races at Bairnsdale today. It was excitement
from the outset with the first runner Glenariff
saluting in the second race on the card over 1200
metres. The mare
led throughout and looked beaten at the turn but
found another gear when threatened in the straight. Glenariff by Jeune, is a half
sister to Doonan who won the
prestigious three year old race – The Golden Rose
bettering Al Maher, Econsul and Savabeel.
It was
a deserved win for Glenariff, who was first to the
post at Cranbourne ten days ago, and subsequently
disqualified because the jockey weighed in 100 grams
under the allowable weight.
In the
very next race another Lauriston bred mare scored
line honours, this time over 1600 metres. Zapphire
sat just off the leader and pounced around the bend
to win by two lengths. Zapphire brought a up a
running Double for
Lauriston bred winners and became Lauriston’s 25th
bred individual winner.
Ricky
decided to step Rapidement out in the seventh over
1200 metres. It was a bold move, because she had
never really been competitive at that distance
before. Ricky had decided a change in her gear may
help. It did. She led from the outset and Jade
was swinging around the bend with the rest of the
field already off the bit. She won by 3.5 lengths. “I
think the change in her work at home and the
tongue-tie have made a lot of difference. Hopefully
there are more wins around the corner for her.”
Another Ricky Maund horse, Paramount, finished
third.
It was
Jade Darose’s first winning Treble at one
track. “Her style of riding really suits some of our
horses.”
Later
that day, in the second at Towoomba’s twilight
meeting over 1000 metres Phillip Wolfgram quickly
took Swift Sands to the lead, and the Neville
Saunder’s trained 3yo filly never looked in danger.
Swift Sands scored her third win by more than five
lengths and pushed her prizemoney to more than
$60,000. The win was the fourth for the day – a
Quadruple.

Back To Back Wins For

15 January 2010
“I
think the penny has dropped with him now.” said
trainer Ricky Maund after Perikon scored an
impressive win at Moonee Valley tonight over 1200
metres, just one week after winning at Mornington.
It was
an incident packed race. Perikon, jumped well from
the inside gate, however, settled further back than
planned. He over raced fiercely and did not look
comfortable behind horses. At the 600 metre mark, in
front of Perikon, and a little wider out, Ne Power
tumbled and jockey Nathan Rose fell heavily,
breaking his collar bone. Rounding the Moonee Valley
turn, apprentice jockey Brent Evans found room and
Perikon responded positively to win comfortably on
the line.
“That
was a pretty good win. There are a pile of excuses
why he shouldn’t have won this race – luckily we
don’t need any of them.”
Lauriston would like to wish Nathan Rose a speedy
recovery.

Argenteum gets the Trip
14 January 2010
“I’m
not sure if he can run a mile – but if can get the
trip he has a good chance of winning this race,”
explained trainer Neville Saunders about the first
race at Ipswich today. “Other Iglesia’s have done it
– look at Diamondsondinside – he won over a mile and
a quarter.”
Argenteum got the trip. Ridden confidently by
Phillip Wolfgram, he settled off the pace and on the
rails. It was a good win, holding out the in form
Easy Knight. Well backed odds on favourite Dusty’s
Felt finished a further three lengths away fourth.
“That
opens up a whole new set of options for him now.” It
was the three year old gelding’s second win from

9 January 2010
Bel’s
Ringer won
race nine, a 1200 metre class 4 race on turf at
Singapore last night. The John Meagher trained
gelding was tightened for room shortly after the
start and settled slightly worse than midfield on
the fence.
At the
400 metre mark Bel’s Ringer was behind a wall of
horses and looked an unlikely chance, however
finding space and guiding the gelding toward the
centre of the track, jockey KB Soo, timed his run to
perfection to grab the front runners on the line.
The win
is Bel’s Ringer’s second and has pushed his prize
money earnings to more than S$73,000 (roughly
AUD$56,000). His previous win was on the Singapore

Encroacher Wins
Bairnsdale Cup
3 January 2010
Today
the partnership of trainer Ricky Maund, and jockey
Andrew Mallyon added the Bairnsdale Cup to their
booty. Slowly away, Encroacher soon gathered his
feet to sit just off the pace. Rounding the turn,
Encroacher, was pushed out to make room around the
front runners and from then on he always looked the
likely winner. He won, running away, by a length and
a half. It was the gelding’s eighth victory, and
probably his most impressive.
“Thank
goodness for Rocket (AKA Encroacher),” said trainer
Ricky Maund. It had been a tough day at the office.
Earlier, the Ricky Maund trained and Lauriston bred
mare Gleneriff had been disqualified after taking
out the third at Cranbourne by three lengths. The
rider had weighed in under the allotted 57 kg.
“This
trophy will take pride of place in his cabinet. He

better with age so I don’t think it will be his
last.”

Lauriston's 23rd individually bred winner when
she took out a 3yo maiden over 1300 metres at
Cranbourne today. It was only her second start. The
filly, piloted by Chris Symons, jumped well and led
throughout. When challenged in the straight she
found another gear to win by a length. All for Fame
is trained by Greg Eurell.
All for Fame,
by Quest For Fame, is the first foal out of
Lauriston mare Orpenella. She was purchased at the
2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale by
